Travelling to School

TRAVEL WISE

St Leo's supports the Travelwise program run by the Auckland Regional Transport Authority.    The aim of Travelwise is to improve road safety and reduce car trips to school.

Car trips to school add to traffic congestion, parking hassles, air pollution and the risk of crashes.  When travelling by car parents and children miss valuable opportuities to meet friends and get to know their local community.

St Leos encourages all parents and children to consider whether they can increase their use of active and sustainable travel choices such as walking, cycling, scootering, joining together to carpool or using the walking school bus.  (NB:  To cycle to school at St Leo's children must be at least 9 years old and have a signed note from their parents)

As part of the Travelwise program, all children are involved in an annual education program covering issues such as road safety.  Local police also visit annually and perform bike checks on children's bikes.

WALKING SCHOOL BUS

As part of the Travelwise program St Leo’s encourages students to walk to school where possible.

Currently St Leo's has 1 route, the starting point of which begins at the corner of Eton Ave and Tainui Rd each morning at 8.10am. See the attached map. Collection points along the way are:

  • the corner of Beconsfield at 8.15am
  • Outside Bema Fish & Chips at 8.20am
  • corner of Derby St and Albert Rd at 8.25am

All St Leos children are welcome to join.  If you would like your children to join the WSB or are interested in another route please contact Victoria Galpin, our WSB co-ordinator.

As we attract children from all over the Devonport Peninsula, it is not possible to have the variety of walking school bus routes found in some other local zoned schools.  Many of our children however walk with other St Leo's pupils from their local area.  If you are interested in this, please contact the School Office as they may be able to let you know what other St Leo's children live nearby to you.
